Should I be editing my meta tags, URLs or titles?

Should I be editing my meta tags, URLs or titles?

We strongly suggest that you read and understand the support article What should I be doing about SEO? before reviewing the following.

Your page URL and meta tags should not be considered tools for improving your search engine rank.

Instead, you should consider these as items that supplement the one true basis of your search engine rank: your content.

Consider expanding the content of your page rather than editing your meta tags

As explained in the above-mentioned article, your site automatically creates SEO URL’s and meta tags and we recommend that you do not get bogged down in tinkering with this system. Applying the recommended items in the aforementioned article are a far more affective use of your resources and will also ensure that your URL’s, meta titles and descriptions are optimised without requiring your direct attention.

When To Review Your Meta

If you are still interested in reviewing your page URL and meta tags despite the above, then you should do so only if:

Proceed at your own risk.

The following is for information only. Aarcade does not provide support for meta customisation.

Incorrectly customising your meta tags may negatively affect your search engine ranking.

Meta Title

A meta title is located in the head of a web page and in its simplest form appears as:

<title>This Is My Page Title</title>

Use

  • Meta titles are displayed at the top of a web browser window.
  • Meta titles are applied to bookmarking and sharing of the page link.
  • Meta titles are used as the title of search results in nearly all cases, however a search engine may decide to use a more relevant alternative.

Search Engine Ranking

Meta titles may be considered in the calculation of search engine ranking. If/when they are, they are given low weight compared to page content.

Guidelines

  • Meta titles must be text only (no code / HTML or new lines).
  • Meta titles must be relevant to content, descriptive and concise. Avoid vague descriptors like “Home” for your home page, or “Profile” for a specific person’s profile. Also avoid unnecessarily long or verbose titles, which are likely to get truncated when they show up in the search results.
  • Avoid keyword stuffing. It’s sometimes helpful to have a few descriptive terms in the title, but there’s no reason to have the same words or phrases appear multiple times.
  • Avoid repeated or boilerplate meta titles. It’s important to have distinct, descriptive titles for each page on your site.
  • Brand your meta titles, but concisely. For example, “T-Shirts | American Apparel”

Basic Customisation

Your meta titles are generated directly from the title you assign to your custom pages, products and categories. To customise your meta titles, edit the associated page, product or category title in your Big Cartel admin area.

Advanced Customisation

Refer to Insert Content - Metadata and Scripts.

URL

Your page URL’s are generated automatically by the Big Cartel platform:

http://my-shop-name.bigcartel.com/category/girls

Use

  • URL’s are used as a fixed location for your page on the internet.
  • URL’s are applied to bookmarking and sharing of page links.
  • URL’s are displayed in search results.

Search Engine Ranking

URL’s may be considered in the calculation of search engine ranking. If/when they are, they are given low weight compared to page content.

Guidelines

Your URL’s are generated directly from the title you assign to your custom pages, products and categories. The above meta title guidelines therefore apply here.

Basic Customisation

Changing URL’s will break any external link to the relevant page, including links for search results.

Your URL’s are generated directly from the title you assign to your custom pages, products and categories. These URL’s are fixed when you first save the relevant title, so further title changes will have no affect upon your URL’s. This protection is in place to ensure that links to your site do not become broken as a result of renaming products or pages.

The exception to this protection is your product categories. Renaming categories will result in a change in the category URL.

The only way to change a product or custom page URL in your Big Cartel shop is to delete the relevant product or custom page and re-add it with a new title.

Meta Description

A meta description is located in the head of a web page and in its simplest form appears as:

<meta name="description" content="This is my page description.">

Use

  • Meta descriptions are sometimes used for search result descriptions, if it gives users a more accurate description than can be derived from the on-page content.

Search Engine Ranking

Meta descriptions are not considered in the calculation of search engine ranking.

Guidelines

  • Meta descriptions must be text only (no code / HTML or new lines).
  • Meta descriptions should accurately describe the content of the page.
  • Meta descriptions must be high quality, descriptive and engaging. The purpose is to inspire a viewer to click the link to your site.
  • Meta descriptions must be concise. Find the average length of descriptions for your relevant search results, and ensure that your description is less than or equal to this length.
  • The meta description doesn’t have to be in sentence format; it can include structured data about the page, e.g. content=”Author: A.N. Author, Illustrator: P. Picture, Category: Books, Price: $17.99, Length: 784 pages”

Basic Customisation

Your meta descriptions are generated directly from the text content of your custom pages or product descriptions. To customise your meta descriptions add and edit text at the beginning of your custom page or product description in your admin area.

Your site description is used on your home page and on pages where there is not sufficient text content to generate a description. Edit your site description via your Big Cartel Store > Settings admin area.

Advanced Customisation

Refer to Insert Content - Metadata and Scripts.

Meta Keywords

The meta keywords tag has been ignored by Google since 2009. Aarcade does not use, or support the use of, the meta keywords tag.
