Shortcodes – Import Instagram, blogs and other RSS feeds

If you are new to shortcode, please refer to the article An introduction to shortcodes before working with the following instructions.

Simplest Form

[[import feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]

This shortcode will display posts from the feed URL entered in the feed option.

feed

This option defines the feed URL, which may also be referred to as an RSS or Atom URL.

Valid values are any valid and active feed URL and must begin with http

This option is required.

[[import feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]

Do not use the URL of your blog page - e.g. http://blog.tumblr.com/ - for this option.

You must use the feed URL for your blog - e.g. http://blog.tumblr.com/rss

If you are not sure what the feed URL is for your blog, refer to the support articles / resources for your blogging platform.

Instagram

You can import posts from your Instagram by entering a special URL into the feed setting (see above). The format of this special URL is as follows:

http://api.aarcade.net/instagram-feed/bigcartelusername/

You must replace bigcartelusername in the above URL with the Big Cartel username of your theme license listed in your Aarcade Admin > Licenses area. Do not use your Instagram username.

You must also ensure that a valid and complete Instagram URL is entered in the Social Network Links settings of your theme license listed in your Aarcade Admin > Licenses area — for example: https://instagram.com/bigcartel/ — as this is where your Instagram posts will be retrieved from.

For example, if our Aarcade theme license was for our shop at http://iamashop.bigcartel.com our Instagram import would be:

[[import feed="http://api.aarcade.net/instagram-feed/iamashop/"]]

If you want your images to link to your original Instagram post, you must enable the images only option detailed in section images-only below. For example:

[[import images-only="1" feed="http://api.aarcade.net/instagram-feed/iamashop/"]]

The most common application of the Instagram import is to display a single row of the latest Instagram post images. Each of which link to the original post and have no titles / text. This is achieved by adding the no-titles, count and columns options (detailed below) as shown in the following example:

[[import images-only="1" no-titles="1" count="6" columns="6" feed="http://api.aarcade.net/instagram-feed/iamashop/"]]

Note that setting the count and columns options to the same value results in a single row of images.

count

This option defines the number of posts to display from the feed. Valid values are any whole number.

Note that most feeds have a limited number of posts, so setting a very high number will not necessarily show that number of posts. In other words, the maximum number of posts that can be displayed is defined by your feed settings.

When this option is not included, the default value is 10

[[import count="5" feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]

This option removes the links to the original post. The only valid value for this option is 1

When this option is not included, the post titles and thumbnails will link back to the original post.

[[import no-links="1" feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]

no-titles

This option removes the post titles. The only valid value for this option is 1

When this option is not included, the post titles will be displayed normally.

[[import no-titles="1" feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]

images-only

This option displays only images from the posts (where available). The images will link to the original post if links are enabled. The only valid value for this option is 1

When this option is not included, the post content will be displayed normally.

[[import images-only="1" feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]

date-format

This option displays a date before the post content, in the format specified. Valid values are any plain text including the date format characters Y, y, F, M, m, n, S, l, j, D, d, g, G, h, H, i, s, a or A. For the definition of each of these characters, refer to the PHP date function.

When this option is not included, no date is displayed.

[[import date-format="D jS of M, Y" feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]

padding

This option defines the vertical padding between posts. Valid values are any whole number.

When this option is not included, the default value is 10

[[import padding="40" feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]

columns

This option displays the posts in a grid with X columns. Valid values are any whole number, although very high numbers will render the content unreadable.

When this option is not included, the posts are displayed one per line (like a standard blog).

[[import columns="4" feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]

paddingh

This option defines the horizontal padding between posts when displayed as a grid (see columns option above). Valid values are any whole number.

When this option is not included, the default value is 35

[[import paddingh="12" feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]

share-tools

This option defines the social network sharing tools displayed for each post. Valid values are:

share
Facebook share link
like
Facebook like link
tweet
Twitter tweet link
pinit
Pinterest pinit link
tumblr
Tumblr post link
plus
Google plus link
email
Email post link
addthis
AddThis multi-network sharing tool

More than one value can be added, separated by a comma.

When this option is not included, no social network links are displayed.

[[import share-tools="tweet,tumblr,email" feed="http://blog.bigcartel.com/rss"]]
