Important PayPal account setup when using PayPal checkout

Understand how the PayPal checkout page works

When PayPal thinks you have a PayPal account

If you complete your checkout process to test the experience, you will note that the PayPal account log in is presented as your primary option for payment. This is because PayPal has left a cookie on your computer to indicate that you have a PayPal account.

However, anyone can choose to pay with a credit or debit card from this screen by clicking the Don’t have a PayPal account? link.

When PayPal thinks you don’t have a PayPal account

For any customer that does not have a PayPal account, a credit card form will be presented as the primary option for payment. This will occur when PayPal does not detect a cookie, either due the current browser device never being used for a PayPal account or the browser cookies have been recently cleared.

Ensure that you are NOT blocking your Big Cartel checkout payments

If you have activated payment blocking from non-encrypted websites your customers may be getting a “The seller accepts encrypted website payments only” error. To check this setting, and turn of if necessary:

  1. Log in to your PayPal account
  2. Click Profile and settings under the user icon drop down at the top right

  1. Log in to your PayPal account
  2. Click Profile and settings under the user icon drop down at the top right
  3. Click My selling tools in the left navigation bar
  4. Locate Customer service message in the Getting paid and managing my risk section and click the associated Update link
  5. Enter your custom message
  6. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page
