Extended category controls

Extended category controls

Aarcade themes allow extended control over the display of categories and products via the application of special prefixes to your category names.

To apply any of the following controls, add a new category or edit an existing one, and add the prefix to the category name followed by a space. For example, adding an x-d prefix to the category My Category:

x-d My Category

For general instructions on adding categories, refer to How do I edit product categories and subcategories in my Big Cartel admin?

x - remove from menus

Extended category controls at Aarcade

An x prefix category will be excluded from main menus. Products within the category will still be visible in general products pages where applicable.

The x prefix may be used for grouping products separate from your main browsing, e.g. a landing page linked from an advertising campaign.

Note that links to categories replace all punctuation and spaces with hyphens, so to link to our example category:

x Advertised Offer

our link URL would be:

http://my-store.bigcartel.com/category/x-advertised-offer

Always test your URL before using it.

x-a - remove from menus and general products pages

Extended category controls at Aarcade

An x-a prefix category will be excluded from main menus. Products within the category will be hidden from general products pages and will only be viewable at the x-a prefix category page and at the product page.

The x-a prefix may be used for grouping products hidden from your main browsing, e.g. a group of product made available to special customers only.

Note that links to categories replace all punctuation and spaces with hyphens, so to link to our example category:

x-a Member's Specials

our link URL would be:

http://my-store.bigcartel.com/category/x-a-member-s-specials

Always test your URL before using it.

x-b - remove from all but product detail page

Extended category controls at Aarcade

An x-b prefix category will be excluded from main menus. Products within the category will be hidden from all product listing pages and will only be viewable at the product detail page.

The x-b prefix may be used to make a specific product available to a specific group, e.g. selling a one-off product directly to an individual by providing them with the product page link.

Note that links to products replace all punctuation and spaces with hyphens, so if the following product is in our example category x-b Direct Sale T-Shirt:

Skull Tank Top

our product link URL would be:

http://my-store.bigcartel.com/product/skull-tank-top

Always test your URL before using it.

x-c - remove from all

Extended category controls at Aarcade

An x-c prefix category will be excluded from main menus. Products within the category will be hidden completely from all public pages of your shop.

The x-c prefix may be used for hiding products from the public, e.g. grouping products for a new release and then making them available simultaneously by simply deleting the x-c prefix category when ready.

Read the Important note on hidden categories below before using this prefix.

x-d - label products

Extended category controls at Aarcade

An x-d prefix category will be excluded from main menus. Products within the category will still be visible in general products pages where applicable.

Products will be labelled with the name of the category. With our example category:

x-d Last Run

our products will be labelled “Last Run”.

The x-d prefix may be used for publicly labelling products with custom text.

x-e - label products, hide price and prevent add to cart

Extended category controls at Aarcade

An x-e prefix category will be excluded from main menus. Products within the category will still be visible in general products pages where applicable.

Products will be labelled with the name of the category. In this way the x-e prefix works identically to the x-d prefix. Additionally the x-e prefix will hide the product price and make it unavailable for purchase.

The x-e prefix may be used for publicly labelling products that require the customer contact you before purchase.

Important note on hidden categories

Regardless of the level of hiding you assign to your products via the x, x-a, x-b and x-c categories listed above, it is still possible for someone to view your hidden products via your Big Cartel external API. This data operates outside of the Big Cartel theme space, and we therefore can not have any influence upon it with our theme coding.

If you want to hide products as far as possible you should uninstall your Facebook app (which uses the external API).

Completely hidden x-c category products can not be purchased in any case, i.e. if someone navigates to the product page to attempt to purchase a hidden product they will get a “product not available” message.

If you feel that the privacy of your hidden products is especially critical then you should cease using the hidden product feature and create your own hidden product system separate from Big Cartel, i.e. via email only or a secure password-protected server.
